Liposuction – for Round Body Lines

Plastic surgeon Martynas Norkus states that many women and even some men come to a decision to undergo a surgery of liposuction. Regulation of nutrition or exhausting workouts require a lot of time, and sometimes they are ineffective, whereas liposuction operations lasting from one to several hours may bring joyful results much faster. Nevertheless, this kind of surgery persists in its controversy – ‘Will the results be apparent?’, ‘Won’t the removed fat appear again?’ Head of the Aesthetical Surgery Centre Martynas Norkus puts efforts to negate wrong ‘truths’ about one of the most popular plastic operations.

Is it true that fat returns after the body contouring?
– When liposuction is performed, fat cells are being removed from the problematic areas of the body. Obvious results may already be observed in the early postoperative period. If the patient follows the principles of healthy lifestyle and is physically active, the body fat never grows again. If a slightly bigger amount of kilocalories per day is consumed, fat cells do not appear, the remaining cells, however, may grow. If the human body weight increases at least by 10 per cent, fat cells start growing as in the sucked areas, so in the others. My experience shows, however, those patients after liposuction surgeries gain more confidence in themselves; they demonstrate incentives to fully take care of their bodies and body contouring.

Is liposuction appropriate to fight with obesity?
– Despite the fact that liposuction in very large volumes (the sucked fat amount during the surgery should not exceed 4 litres) may be dangerous to vital processes in the body, without a balanced diet and sports, liposuction alone will not bring desired results. Liposuction surgery is reasonable for people who suffer from localized fat deposits – in the area of chin, upper arms, waist, buttocks, and legs; and those who overstep the thirty-point limit of BMI should apply to the treatment of obesity specialists.

Does liposuction eliminate cellulite?
– When liposuction surgery is being performed, the fat is removed from the deeper layer of subcutaneous fat, and cellulite usually forms on the surface of the skin. Moreover, during the liposuction surgery, fat cells are removed, the procedure, however, does not have any influence on the processes taking place in the body – microcirculation and lymph flow to the fat layer are not improved, and these are the basic factors of cellulite formation. The answer to this question is no, it does not.

Does the skin after liposuction operation become ‘loose’, flabby?
– The results of liposuction surgery depend on skin elasticity, the amount of sucked fat, the problematic area, and the competence of the plastic surgeon. When carrying out the surgery, it is very important to suck out fat evenly to avoid formation of uneven body contour; for this reason, in some cases, the patient must wear compression clothing in the postoperative period. If there was any ‘loose’ skin before surgery, liposuction surgery will surely not help it shrink. I have warned my patients lots of times that after sucking a large amount of adipose tissue from the abdomen, the abdomen itself may need plastic surgery – the removal of excess loose skin.

Is surgical liposuction already in the past?
– Absolutely not. Despite the fact that in the recent years, there has been laser liposuction applied, the surgical (sucking type) liposuction remains as the most popular and the most effective method, due to possibility of the body fat removal to a greater extent. All therapy methods are good, the greatest difference, however, lies in the competence of the doctor and not the method of surgery itself.
