Breast augmentation surgery may be performed to increase breasts size, restore the lost volume after pregnancy or balance a size difference between the breasts. This could be done by transferring own fat or by placing an implant behind a breast. Having a breast enlargement done can be for aesthetic reasons, and to raise self-confidence.
During the initial consultation a thorough evaluation will determine the most appropriate surgical technique for you. The surgeon will make recommendations about how the implant should be inserted based on your anatomy.
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia and requires one to two hours to complete. The incision may be made in the crease under the breast (inframammary), around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) or under the axilla (armpit). After the incision is made, the surgeon creates a pocket for the implant directly behind the breast tissue or behind the chest (pectoral) muscle. The implant is centered behind the nipple and areola.
